The depiction of Czechoslovakia in the years 1989 - 1990 through the eyes of viewers in the television series Vyprávěj

The bachelor thesis entitled "The depiction of Czechoslovakia in the years 1989 - 1990 through the eyes of viewers in the television series Vyprávěj" deals with the question of how the perception of the portrayal of a particular stage of contemporary history (the November Revolution of 1989 and the social events of the early 1990s) in the series differs between two different groups of viewers, the memorials and the non-memorials. The thesis consists of pilot research conducted with two respondents, each representing one of the two audience groups. Their experience of watching and perceiving the series is explored through a semi-structured interview method with predetermined thematic headings. On a theoretical level, the thesis explores how the format of the series: the memory medium, utilizes concepts of nostalgia along with cultural and communicative memory, while considering account the specificities of post-television audiences. Furthermore it describes the relation between memory and history, as well as presenting the specific importance of the period 1989-1990 in modern Czechoslovak and Czech history. TV show Ulice as the first czech daily soap opera

The aim of the submitted thesis "TV show Ulice (The Street) as the first Czech daily Soap opera is to analyze TV Nova's daily series Ulice. The first part of the thesis defines soap opera as a genre, it's history, development and definition. It defines characteristic elements of genre. Then the thesis concerns with TV show Ulice. It describes creation of the show, production, environment and characters of the show. Ulice is compared with British shows Coronation Street and EastEnders throughout the thesis.

Czech serial "Velmi křehké vztahy" characters with regard to their property estate and social class

The thesis titled "Czech serial Velmi křehké vztahy characters with regard to their property estate and social class" is linked to specialised publications which originated in the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Charles University in Prague mapping how the 'after the velvet revolution' series made by the Czech TV portray the topic of wealth and affluence. The theory part consist of findings from two socio-scientific fields, i.e. sociology and media studies, the outcomes of which will consequently meet in the research part of this thesis. The subject matter of the research part of this thesis is the episodes of the third season of the Velmi křehké vztahy soap opera which was broadcast by the Prima Czech TV channel between 2008 and 2009. This research sample was achieved by using a qualitative research technique, specifically the grounded theory method. The thesis focuses predominantly on how a class hierarchy and wealth determine their character. The attention is also paid to listing various social classes which appear in the series, and to the outline of the areas of a social life in which the social mobility is possible. Construction of gender identity within the series Dokonalý svět /the perfect world

The thesis analyzes the instruments of gender stereotypes reproduction and gender identity construction in Czech TV series Dokonalý svět. Is the media content gendered? With which instruments of gender stereotypes reproduction and gender identity construction is TV viewer confronted and on which levels? I use the theory of social construction of reality, the theory of the lenses of gender or the characters and narrative structure of the TV series (soup opera) to come to a conclusion. The thesis focuses on the fact that Dokonalý svět does not only reflect the stereotypes on the other hand. It confronts the standard gender orders by the comic character. The comedy character ridicules some gender stereotypes and shakes their social status.

"Between Dallas and Rosamunde Pilcher": Romantic Stories in TV Films and Serials

This essay will deal with comparing the different ways in narrating romantic stories in serial and film form. The individual stories will follow the narrative features typical for sentimental literature, which can be perceived as a forerunner and often a lively influence on this type of television production. At the same time, it will analyze the procedures by which the filmmakers try to increase or at least maintain the popularity of romantic films and TV series, which are rejected in terms of elite culture as well as trash literature. In addition to the specific forms of stories, they will also focus on their characters, but also on the sound and visual components as they are the key differences between literature, TV series (from which it will analyze some soap operas and telenovelas such as Dallas, Dynasty, Esmeralda, Ugly Betty) television films (film adaptations of women's novels written by Rosamunde Pilcher, Inga Lindström, etc.) that continued directly after. Finally, it will also reflect on the possible influence of these romantic stories on the everyday lives of their viewers as well as on the situation in society. So although romantic movies and TV series generally appear to be hollow and unenriching, their attribution in this area cannot be denied and therefore should hold an equal position with other genres in the field of popular culture.

Media image of nurses in the czech series

Master thesis The Media Image of Nurses in Czech TV Series discusses the ways of depicting nurses in Czech TV series shot from 2003 to 2014, particularly in Rose Garden Surgery 2, Hospital at Town Outskirts 20 Years Later, Hospital at Town Outskirts - New Fates and Doctors from Počátky. The goal of the thesis is to explore how the nurses are presented in the series and how the medial image of the nurses is perceived by medical staff themselves. The first part of the study describes the environment of current health care system, it presents an overview of health care professions and also the roles of doctors, nurses and patients. Attention is paid also to professional associations of health care staff. The second part introduces the environment of media in relation to TV series, specifically the terms genre (with focus to medical drama and soap opera genres), TV series, a character, representation and stereotypes. Chapter no. 3, the practical part of the thesis, deals with the research methodology followed by analysis of the individual series, more specifically by description of the plot of the selected episodes, by analysis of characters of the nurses, by analysis of reception of the nurses' characters by the audience and by a conclusion. Docusoap - between documentary and series; adaptation of foreign practices in the Czech Republic

- 1 - Abstract The aim of this paper is to describe docusoap in relation to reality TV and its position in the world. Observe its development from the very beginning of creation and definition of television genres. It deals with the international practice shooting, its essential elements and subsequent applications within Czech programs included in the docusoap format. I analyzed its typical topics of the five monitoring programs within the Czech Television platform and concluded that the results of the most frequented phenomena here. Thanks to that, I could assess the popularity of selected topics for spectators and compare them with foreign productions. The output of the project is to create an image of this subgenre position in the Czech Republic and find other possible topics that docusoaps can deal with, even in the context of cross-genre borrowing. That will help us understand why this genre originated and what path its actions will continue to take and what copyright procedures, combined with social themes, and are considered attractive for the audience.

Beginning and rise of the Czech docusoap

Bachelor thesis "Beginnings and Expansion of the Czech docusoap" focuses on a young television genre "docusoap". After the first introductory chapter, the second chapter will present a brief history of television as a dynamic medium. The third chapter is focused on the concept of docusoap and its definition in the context of other genres. Fourth chapter, the practical part of the thesis, outlines the genre on commercial television stations in the US, which has a long tradition. I will try to analyze selected projects of implemented docusoap genre of television in the US. Other chapters present docusoap in Czech surroundings in both public and commercial television. Selected titles are differed in their themes and I will try to make an analysis of the selected formats. Eventually I`ll compare Czech docusoap with shows made in USA, where this genre is very well established.

Sexuality as a storylinig element in the present television soap operas

A diploma thesis deals with sexuality as a storylining element in Czech soap operas. The sample contains long-running relational series that were broadcasted by television stations in October-November 2013. Specifically, there were series Cesty domů 2, Gympl s (r)učením omezeným, Ulice and Ordinace v růžové zahradě 2. There were used quantitative content analysis to detection the frequency of sexuality and qualitative narrative analysis to explore the context and way for create the plot. The categories of behavior and conversation containing elements of sexuality were analyzed in the study. During the preparation of the categories, I was inspired by research "How much sex is there in soap operas on British TV?" that was realized by Rami Al - Sayed and Barrie Gunter in 2012. I analyzed the elements of sexuality that create the storyline during the research. I examined the particular scenes where did appear the correlation of story to the previous and following events and debates . I focused on the explicit and implicit exposure of sexuality in the series. If there was an aspect of sexuality without storylining function I tried to find the reason for the occurrence in the series.
